How we help Australian business owners avoid falling into a finance trap.
An illustrative example of how a free loan-o contract review can uncover costs a business owner would otherwise have missed.
This case study is an illustrative, composite example based on situations we see regularly across the loan-o panel of lenders. It does not describe one specific client, and no real client details, figures or documents are used.
The situation
A Brisbane-based equipment hire business needed to finance a new piece of machinery to take on a larger contract. The business owner was quoted an interest rate that looked competitive by a finance company they had not dealt with before, and was under time pressure to sign so the equipment could be delivered before the contract started.
Before signing, the owner sent the contract to loan-o for a free review - just to get a second opinion. A specialist called back within 48 hours to arrange it.
What the review found
The headline interest rate was, on its own, reasonable. But reading the full contract surfaced several things the advertised rate did not show:
- A documentation and account-keeping fee added on top of the advertised rate, pushing the true annual cost noticeably higher.
- A balloon payment due at the end of the term that had not been clearly explained verbally, worth a meaningful share of the equipment's value.
- An early payout fee that would have made refinancing or paying the loan out early significantly more expensive than expected.
- A personal guarantee clause broader than the owner had understood from the conversation with the original lender.
None of this made the contract dishonest - the terms were all disclosed, in the document, in the fine print. It simply had not been explained plainly before the owner was asked to sign.
What happened next
With the review in hand, the business owner went back to the original finance company and queried the fees and the balloon structure. Some of the account fees were removed. Where they were not, the owner - now aware of the full cost - chose instead to compare the offer against a small panel of suitable lenders through loan-o.
The equipment finance facility that was ultimately arranged carried a similar headline rate, but with fewer ongoing fees, no early payout penalty, and a smaller balloon payment better matched to how the business planned to use the equipment. Across the life of the loan, the difference added up to a meaningful saving - enough that, for a small equipment hire business, it was money that stayed in the business rather than going toward fees the owner had not budgeted for.

Why this matters
This is the pattern we see most often: it is rarely one dramatic red flag that catches a borrower out. It is usually a handful of ordinary-looking fees and clauses that, added together, change the real cost of a contract. A comparison rate helps for consumer loans, but business finance often will not show one at all - which is exactly why reading the full loan structure matters. Our guide to comparing business finance properly walks through the same checklist we use.
A free contract review will not always change the outcome - sometimes the original offer is genuinely the right one for the business. But it means the decision to sign is made with the full picture, not just the headline number.
